π Share this article The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to Your World The seasonal content update for Minecraft has touched down β and it includes the first new weapon added to the game since the mace made its debut. The lance is now available and it could very well change how you play Minecraft, especially if you enjoy mayhem. An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides The Mounts of Mayhem update also introduces a host of fresh elements and enhancements centered around animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this update, as the development team had already known it was the moment to introduce a new weapon. "From the outset, we understood that we desired a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the use case." If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it. "[Jousting on horses is a major use cases for the spear, and it's a blast," the developer adds. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you couch your lance and deal more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [itβs] tailor-made for mounted duels." Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for equipping the elytra and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she hints. In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it should be made an Olympic sport right away. Another key feature in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the seashells found in-game for years, can be domesticated and ridden for submarine exploration. Not only will it carry you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also preserve your air supply, so there's no need to surface for a breath. The other inclusions are largely things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a zombie Nautilus popping up in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus β or the regular one, for that matter β with a puffer fish. "We've pondered this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also bring in something for the ocean depths," the developer explains. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus concept art looked striking, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game." She also adds that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater." Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks Further inclusions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an excellent design that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a similar rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding zombie on their back. The last two things on the drop's list are refinements, including some much-anticipated adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can ford bodies of water while atop a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it deserves. A Spicy Send-Off for the Year All told, the year-end release of the year is a pretty good one. The spear alone β and the potential for chaos β would have constituted a significant enhancement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic. The Mayhem Mounts content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
